Normandy shutters are crafted from the Kiri tree, one of the fastest-growing tree species in the world. This remarkable timber can be harvested in less than 10 years, and after harvesting, new growth can sprout from the original stump through coppicing. This unique regenerative property makes the Kiri tree an environmentally sustainable choice that also makes economic sense.
Beyond its rapid growth, the Kiri tree offers significant ecological benefits. Its deep taproot system helps regulate the water table, control soil salinity, and absorb pollutants from wastewater. Because the roots do not compete with most crops, Kiri is also ideal for intercropping, providing both environmental and agricultural advantages.
The timber itself is dimensionally stable, consistently knot-free, lightweight, and durable. It features a beautiful light honey to blond colour with a striking wood grain that has a silky, satin-like appearance. Known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, Kiri resists splitting and warping, making it ideal for high-quality shutters.
In addition, Normandy shutters are naturally fire retardant, free of volatile oils, and low in resin, with an ignition temperature of 420°C to 430°C—almost double that of average hardwoods. The wood also offers low thermal conductivity for excellent insulation, and its natural resistance to rotting and decay ensures long-lasting performance in a variety of environments.

Construction
Our reinforced engineered stiles are constructed from multiple bonded layers of wood, creating a strong and stable support system for your shutters. The shutters also feature traditional mortise and tenon joints, widely used in furniture and building construction, which are designed to withstand the shear stress and racking forces of regular operation, making them ideal for long-lasting performance.
To ensure precise fit and minimal movement, we use a patented wood-drying technique that simulates the environmental conditions of the installation site, reducing post-installation shrinking and swelling. The quarter-sawn louvres, cut parallel to the tree rings, provide superior dimensional stability, resisting cupping, twisting, and warping.
Finally, every shutter undergoes a meticulous finishing process, including five rounds of hand sanding and five coats of your chosen paint or stain, resulting in a flawless, durable finish that combines both strength and beauty.
